Complexity simplified
Most biologists both love and hate the complexity of biological systems. A complex system is a dynamic system that behaves in a non-linear fashion and is composed of many interacting elements — a definition that easily covers biomolecules, cells, tissues, organisms and groups of organisms. Emergent behaviors (that is, global behaviors that arise, but are not easily predicted, from the simple in...
متن کاملSimple Complexity Analysis of Simplified Direct Search
We consider the problem of unconstrained minimization of a smooth function in the derivativefree setting using. In particular, we propose and study a simplified variant of the direct search method (of direction type), which we call simplified direct search (SDS). Unlike standard direct search methods, which depend on a large number of parameters that need to be tuned, SDS depends on a single sc...
متن کاملSimplified Lower Bounds on the Multiparty Communication Complexity of Disjointness
We show that the deterministic number-on-forehead communication complexity of set disjointness for k parties on a universe of size n is Ω(n/4). This gives the first lower bound that is linear in n, nearly matching Grolmusz’s upper bound of O(log(n) + kn/2). We also simplify Sherstov’s proof showing an Ω( √ n/(k2)) lower bound for the randomized communication complexity of set disjointness.
متن کاملOn Quasar Masses and Quasar Host Galaxies
The mass of massive black holes in quasar cores can be deduced using the typical velocities of Hβ-emitting clouds in the Broad Line Region (BLR) and the size of this region. However, this estimate depends on various assumptions and is susceptible to large systematic errors. The Hβ-deduced black hole mass in a sample of 14 bright quasars is found here to correlate with the quasar host galaxy lum...
متن کاملTwo Close–Separation Quasar–Quasar Pairs in the Large Bright Quasar Survey
We present photometric and spectroscopic observations of two close quasar– quasar pairs found in the Large Bright Quasar Survey (LBQS) (Hewett et al. 1995, AJ, 109, 1498). The two components of the 2153-2056 pair (z = 1.845, ∆θ = 7. 8, B = 17.9 and 21.3) have the same redshifts within the relatively large uncertainty, ∆vA−B = −1100±1500 km s, of the observations. The quasars are most likely spa...
